Sep 09, 2014· I just finished setting up my pinion depth, shimming the differential preload, and adjusting backlash. Now I have a problem. I decided to use the old paint check method to check the contact between the gears, and it is not right.
A Jegs pinion depth tool is similar in design to pinion depth measuring tools produced by other manufacturers, and is used in the same fashion. Measurements are taken by attaching the tool to the machined bearing cap (mating surface) in the differential housing (with supplied clamps), then checking the measured distance to the pinion gear.
In all of the photos below, the pinion depth is compared to what the Ratech tool says the depth should be. If the tool was accurate, the best pattern should have been where the depth was ". The tool is not accurate enough to trust so I used it to check movement of the pinion in or out only.
When installing new ring and pinion gears, both the front and rear axle need to be done at the same time. Having different gear ratios in the front and rear axles of .
The pinion depth, or checking distance (CD), is the distance from the flat end face of the pinion to the centerline of the ring gear. The center of the ring gear is also the center axis of the bearing caps, and the plane where the two bearing caps separate.
Check out our videos to learn more about US Gear's manufacturing processes and product line. We also have "How To" videos that explain how to install our ring and pinion gears into your rear differential / .
GM 10bolt Part II . Hopefully if you made it this far, you have completed Part I. Part II will cover the install and setup of the ring pinion, and finishing touches.
This is a typical ring and pinion from the axle along with bearing, collapsible spacer, and pinion. The ringandpinion gear determines the gear ratio of the rear axle assembly, and therefore the gear ratio directly impacts vehicle acceleration and fuel economy.
Sep 11, 2007· When setting the pinion depth on a 10 bolt, have any of you guys ever had the need to install a .025 shim behind the pinion to get the rite thought the normal range for a 10 bolt with richmond gears and an eaton was started at .032 because that was the shim size that was behind the richmond gears i had in there ...
Dana 60 Gear Installation. Home / Strange Racing / Dana 60 Gear Installation. Previous Next ... If you're getting contact towards the peaks of the gear add a shim to increase pinion depth, do the reverse if the mark is too deep in the valley of gear. If the mark is too far towards the outside of the gear, keeping within spec decrease backlash ...
Next, the gears are heat treated for added durability to endure the harsh environments of a dailydriven vehicle. Finally, they are lapped to give the mating surface a smooth finish to reduce friction that can lead to noise and excessive wear.
2. Examine the ring gear mounting surface for nicks or burrs which might prevent total landing of the newly installed ring gear. Ring and pinion tooth depth variations can result from a ring gear that is "cocked" on its mounting surface.

May 05, 2010· No markings, The actual pinion depth (for that set) etched into the rear face of the pinion or the offset (+/) from the design depth that AJ quoted. The other thing you want to be sensitive to is the precision with which the gear was manufactured.
Sep 06, 2003· i'm installing some Yukon Gear 's in a TJ D30 for a guy this weekend and want the install to go as quick as possible. i have seen a couple charts somewhere (old chiltons manuals i think) that have the theoretical pinion depths for all the Dana axles.
Pinion gear depth is adjusted with shims that are placed behind the pinion bearing in the housing. Typical placement of a pinion gear depth shim. The thickness of the drive pinion rear bearing shim controls the depth of the mesh between the pinion and ring gear.
